CHAPTER NINE

If the guys were just busy before, they were pointedly avoiding me now. My pheromones probably weren’t helping the situation, though. Every time I saw one of them, I had a vivid flashback of Victor’s face between my legs. Or Will kissing me breathless on the stairs. Or Xander making love to me in the back of his truck.

It was like my brain was a horny movie marathon, and I couldn’t escape. I wished I had my vibrator and an entire box of chocolates. And porn—lots and lots of porn.

But I didn’t, so instead, I buried myself in work. Will and Victor gave me a permanent lunch shift, so I was only serving the old regulars and the lunchtime bingo crowd, with no chance of reconnecting with Teller.

When I wasn’t working, I was studying, or slowly domesticating McKnight. I’d managed to brush him and only got four claw marks, needing zero stitches. Success. That cat was as wild as they got, and disappeared during the day, only to sneak in after I’d gone to sleep. Soon, I’d have to catch him and take him to the vet to get neutered, but I was going to appreciate my scar-free skin for a little longer first. Maybe after my exams.

Those were next week, and I was freaking out. I’d missed so much with my little Omega blackout, and I was still catching up. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t stressed about being among so many people too. Worried that they’d take one look at me and know that I was no longer one of them, that I was an imposter.

There was a knock at my door, startling me and making me smear highlighter right across the page of my textbook. Crap, there went its resale value.

“Come in,” I called, shutting the book. My brain was fried. I’d pick it back up after I ate and ingested a small barrel of coffee.

Will poked his head around the doorframe. “Get dressed, Za. I’m taking you out. You’ve been holed up in this room for a week, and you need some time among humans.”

I realized it was dinnertime, and that meant the only places open were the gas station and the Downtown Bar and Grill. “Are we going to the bar for dinner?”

“Yep. We’ve got a band tonight, and I thought you might like to come dancing with me.”

That actually sounded amazing. Sure, it was the place we both worked, but honestly, it was a small town and you took what you could get when it came to fun activities.

“Sounds good! I’ll get changed.”

Fifteen minutes later, I was in a pretty dress despite the fact I was going to freeze in the early autumn weather. I was wearing my Docs with it, and sensible shoes meant I was half-responsible, right?

Will was dressed in tight black jeans and a long-sleeved Henley that pulled across his muscles in a way that made my mouth water. He was effortlessly sexy, and I was both jealous and so, so thankful on behalf of the man-loving population.
